Hello, I’m Sara Stubenbaum,
a freelance Artist & Designer from Germany.
I have graduated with an M.A. in Fashion Design majoring in womenswear & textiles and my mission is to carry art into fashion thus straight into our lives. And is there a better way for that than using its very core as a canvas?

My story
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
As a child I either spent my time drawing, painting, sculpting or watching my grandmother sew. Fashion was my art, I loved sitting alongside her, doing little embroideries on fabric scraps, or drawing the beautiful dresses from movies as well as making up my own designs, filling up dozens of sketchbooks.
At 14 I started making them, then still with the help of my grandmother, who unfortunately passed away a year after. The last time I could ask her what I should be sewing next she uttered,
smiling under the morphine-high:
"A dress with petticoat!“
So no sooner said than done, in
her honour I designed and made
my first entire collection inspired
by the 1950s featuring hand-painted textiles, which I showcased at the Graf-Zeppelin Haus in Friedrichshafen and organized a photoshoot with my aunt, an avid fashion aficionado,
who just launched her career
as an equine photographer.
From then the path was set for me:
I was going to be an Artist using the medium Fashion!(It only dawned on me later that most people don't consider fashion as art.) Nonetheless I kept sticking to my vision
up to this day.
EDUCATION & WORK
After graduating from high school I completed internships in Costume Design and Tailoring in order to take up my fashion studies at University of Applied Sciences Trier, during which I continued working at the local theatre costume department and had the singular opportunity to work with VERONIQUE BRANQUINHO in her (near) Antwerp studio as a design intern for two seasons, where I was fortunate to spend most of the time drawing for textile designs and assisting the collection development with the team.

I moved into my favourite place, my art studio and graduated with B.A. in 2018. I had the chance to shoot my final collection one last time with my aunt. Subsequently I proceeded with my Masters, majoring again in womenswear and textiles. At that time I got referred to my first freelance client in fashion and had been working since then mainly in textile design but also supporting all stages of product development, where my fondness for textiles grew even more and finally obtained
my M.A. (with distinction) in 2023.
LIVING MY DREAM
With over 5 years of industry experience under my belt, I'm now diving in full-time with the mission of bringing Art into Fashion through telling unique stories with textiles, for brands who would like to infuse their products with Art.

In my practise there are no boundaries between art and design, as both naturally flow into one another.
As a child this had been the most natural thing for me, as I equally loved drawing, designing and making clothes as well as sculpting and painting. Everything was a medium of art and that’s still what I hold to be true. The only thing that might have changed, is the realisation that most people probably see it differently.
✴︎
To me, art means the eternal freedom to create your own world and the opportunity to share it with others. Art does not obey to the „limitedness“ of everyday life, but nurtures soul and spirit. Clothing therefore offers a rich medium, if it is created with the same intention.
Creating artistic concepts, playing with silhouettes and painterly surfaces, draping divinely soft silk across the body, endless possibilities to orchestrate colour, form and material to a singular vision that captures pure emotion that moves the wearer as well as the spectator thus providing a special experience, really fascinates me.
Whereas fabric remains at the very core of that, it is an often overlooked medium especially fertile for storytelling and infusing art into fashion. That’s why I immersed myself deeper into that realm during my studies and freelance work.
Cultural history and heritage are a huge inspiration for me. I think they bring great value, if studied and honoured, for transformation and sparking new ideas.
Trends rarely intrigue me, however the potential that clothing and textiles in general possess to bring more art into our lives, remains priceless. ❦
