GËLLE FRA meets WONDER WOMAN

The Gëlle Fra was created in 1923 following a citizens’ initiative, created by the artist Claus Cito, as a monument in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives due to the first World War. The Gëlle Fra (golden lady) is a personification of an angel of peace, holding a laurel wreath in her hands.

She stands for unity, courage and freedom, what in todays’ pop-cultural world would be attributes to someone like Wonder Woman.

No sooner said than done the vol(t)age sisters asked me to create a print that gave comic superheroine vibes to the Luxemburgian monument.

MELUSINA (on the) ROCKS

This print was inspired by the legendary mermaid Melusina whose legend is closely tied to the foundation of Luxembourg by count Siegfried in 963. It is said that she agreed to marry Siegfried under one condition: To have her the privacy to spend Saturdays, locked up alone.

Siegfried who couldn’t contain his curiosity after years passing, followed he to her private chamber on one Saturday, where he discovered her secret by peaking through the keyhole. As she laid in the bath her legs turned into a fishtail. When Melusina noticed him, she disappeared into the river Alzette and was never to be seen again.

BOCK op Lëtzebuerg!

The Bockfels is the promontory above the river Alzette in Luxembourg city on which Count Siegfried built his castle in 963, as a base from where the city of Luxembourg was developed.

Today only parts and the casemates (formerly used as underground vault against military attacks) remain, which I can be seen partly on this ink drawing that I created for the Bockfels shirt.
